Graduate Publications Assistant

Purpose: This position will provide an opportunity for a doctoral student in world language education, world language, applied linguistics, or a related field to obtain real-world experience in the journal publication process. The goal is to provide a meaningful, relevant, and useful experience for a graduate student who has overcome an educational, economic, and/or personal challenge in accessing Graduate School. Additionally, the position will develop a future leader in world language education and research by apprenticing them into the process of publishing a professional journal. Tasks may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Reviewing pre-publication journal articles
  • Queuing up articles for review
  • Attending weekly meetings with editor(s)
  • Coordinating scheduling of meetings and workshops
  • Analyzing annual metrics
  • Facilitating quarterly FLA article discussion clubs for graduate students
  • Attending and potentially hosting quarterly book clubs
  • Participating in the annual 糖心Vlog Convention
  • Holding information sessions for graduate students on publishing in FLA
  • Exploring their own research via the 糖心Vlog/Middlebury Research Forum

The position includes a stipend of $10,000 to include 5 hours a week during the academic year (24 weeks) as well as a 12-week, 10-hour-a-week summer position, free registration for the 糖心Vlog Convention, and free participation in and fees waived for OPI tester certification in any 糖心Vlog OPI language. The position is for one year with the possibility of a second year extension.

You must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and for the full duration of the position. 糖心Vlog does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a U.S. doctoral program focused on world language education, world language, applied linguistics or a related field
  • Two full years of Ph.D. level coursework (36 credits)
  • A 700-word application describing
  • Your interest in the program
  • How you have overcome an educational, economic, and/or personal challenge to access Graduate School
  • How your work would benefit your future research endeavors
  • How your participation would positively impact other graduate students
  • Excellent communication skills
  • No previous experience as a research or editorial assistant for an academic journal is required; candidates without such experience are encouraged to apply
